101 in 1001 Update Update #4

It has been longer than a hot minute...maybe a hot week...since I updated my 101 in 1001. But it's less than a year until my list ends and I've only completed 40 items...which is scary! Basically, I need to get my butt in gear. I will say I am super proud though, I only completed 51 of my first list and I remember scrambling to finish up that many. So I definitely have more this time than I did last time, but still, I would love to do better than last time. My goal is about 70, give or take a few, because there are some that just didn't work out and are now impossible.

And I think this brings up a good talking point. 101 in 1001s to me are not about being so easy that you can complete all of them in three years. I think they are about challenging yourself and laughing about how your life changes throughout the years. Things on my list (or Hannah's) now crack us up because we really question what we were thinking — for Hannah it was skydiving for me it was going to see Hamilton...because who do we think we are?

Anyway, here are my updates, enjoy - xoxo darling, Hayden.

Travel somewhere new - Completed

This past fall I ventured to Michigan! So I got a new state and was able to travel somewhere I'd never been before. It was really cold, but I was with my parents so it made it perfect. We drank a lot of beer, ate heartily and I got to experience Detroit airport's fancy interior train.

Read 55 Books - Working

God y'all, as a person who loves to read, reading can be hard! But it's okay, I'm definitely doing better. My goal for 2019 is to try to read 52 books, so even more than this goal. Still loving mysteries and the occasional adorable romance novel.

Get a big girl job - Completed

Phew, this one was a long time coming. I applied to over 150 jobs and ended up getting one at Miles, where I had previously interned. Because that's life, ya know? But I knew I wanted to live in Denver and pursue my passion for travel writing and I did just that! It was an insane whirlwind of moving out here, getting a car and settling down. But I think I'm finally hitting my stride and I'm really happy.

Volunteer somewhere new - Completed

Since I feel more settled in than ever, I've started working on volunteering at various places in Denver. Volunteering has always been second nature to me since early on in my life. To start I am working on a committee at a domestic violence shelter here in Denver. We are throwing a food-related event and I'm hyped about it!

Do three more Haute Table travel guides - Completed

Doing travel guides is something I've been trying to be better at. I write travel as my job and sometimes I can get burnt out that way. But there is nothing I love more than crafting these things! It's so fun to relive my trips and help y'all out when it comes to where to eat and what to see. London is probably my favorite and my most recent {you can also find Houston and Paris}.

Watch three documentaries - Completed

Documentaries can be fascinating, but for me personally I have to be really into the topic. Otherwise I just find myself on my phone, and that was not the point of this goal. However, I did find a few things that suited me and I'm trying to find more {also, yes I watched the Fyre doc on Netflix and am just as obsessed as you are}. The Gaga doc was so good and made me cry, would recommend. And Super Tunnel is just fascinating if you've ever wondered how hard it is to drill giant holes in the Earth.

Try five new cocktails - Completed

I think I've completed this now about 50 times over but these are some of my absolute favorites {and one least favorite}. The Bulldog Fiz at Half Pint in Austin, to be honest I don't even know if that place is still open. But I loved how fresh it was. The Sophia at Gozo is wonderful and so aesthetically pleasing. A Watermelon JalapeƱo Margarita at Comida is how I want to spend all of my Tuesdays. Now, I kind of hated the Hurricane at Pat O's but it is a tradition and everyone should have one...and them promptly throw it away. Was my least favorite truly the Bloody Mary? Why YES. I hated it, Marcus hated it, we all hate it. Who wants to drink gazpacho with alcohol in it?

Find my signature drink - Completed

I've finally admitted to myself that I found my signature drink back in the summer of 2016 when I studied in London. It's a dirty gin martini.

Take a trip with my girlfriend(s) - Completed

Hannah and I went to Denver almost exactly a year ago and it was just perfect. There are so many reasons as to why we are best friends and one of them is that we travel well together. We both like to see a lot in a short amount of time, we eat the same foods and can always have more dessert. It was the precursor to me moving out here and I will always be so thankful for that trip. Plus, she's coming out here for our bestie anniversary in April and I cannot wait!

See five plays - Working

I'm trying to plan to see the last few this spring because there are a few that are calling my name. I love going to the theater. If you don't see plays, you totally should.

Clean out my computer - Completed

Well...as soon as I graduated I did a massive clean-out and then I ended up getting a brand new laptop so that sucker is CLEAN. And it feels so nice.

Watch all of the movies nominated for Best Motion Picture at the Academy Awards - Working
Yes, the Academy Awards have come and gone but this goal doesn't say I can't watch the movies after the fact. I have three left and I do plan to watch them I just can't get excited about 'em. But I will do it!

Update my portfolio website - Completed

When I graduated this was one of the first things I did. I've added a creative side that needs more work but at least there is something there. If you're dying to see the site, click here.

Get a library card - Completed

Yaaaaaas! I went over to my local JeffCo branch and got one. And I've been using the heck out of it!

Clean out my closet (again) - Completed

When I moved to Denver I basically created a capsule wardrobe that I'm slowly adding to. I just added some pieces from home for spring and summer and I'm finally running out of hangers. But yeah, I cleaned out my closet when I graduated and I need to do it again if I'm honest.

Go apple picking - Completed

FINALLY. FINALLY. FINALLY. And I can't wait to go back.

Send Christmas cards - Completed

This was my first year of sending holiday cards by myself. My family also did them but I loved sending them off to my friends. I've gotten so many messages of their delight when they've opened them, which makes me so happy.

See three more "classic" films - Working

I watched The Shining a while back...yeah I wasn't a big fan...but I am planning on watching two more sometime this month. I just need to remember to do so, I always just end up watching something on Netflix but I can totally do an old movie. If you have any favorites, let me know!

Find some new podcasts - Completed

Okay, My Dad Wrote a Porno is something everyone should listen to! I found it via Cupcakes and Cashmere and now I am obsessed. Cannot wait for the new season! I've also been listening to Table Manners and 99% Invisible. Let me know what you listen to because I'm always looking!

Say yes to five invitations I would normally say no to - Working

This has been a challenge but I'm working on it. I'm thinking I'll complete this more in the summer when I have free time and there isn't ice/snow involved. But I will say the first time I did it, I had no regrets. It was one of the best nights!

Try five new brunches - Completed

I mean...obvi this is completed. If you're curious, Annette and Devil's Food Cookery are my two Denver favorites.

Go to bed at 10 p.m. three nights in a row - Completed

Weirdly enough, I just did this again this week — unintentionally. I'm currently loving wearing a Vineyard Vines longsleeve tee {they are so so so soft} with LL Bean long underwear {I wear regular undies too, I'm using these more like really thin leggings} and thick socks to bed and man I put that on after a super hot shower and I'm out within 15 minutes of putting my head down.

Go one month without ordering delivery - Completed

I have since broken this but I went a long time without delivery between graduation and about two months after moving out here. Now I'm back on my food delivery train but I'm going to blame it on the snow...

Resign to feel stupid together with a friend - Completed

I'm sure this has happened a few times but I went to dinner with two of my really good friends out here a while back to a, now my favorite, pizza place. We ended up staying until close {about three hours of time} and just laughed and talked about the most ridiculous things.

Visit a new island - Completed

I finally went to Cabbage Key! After living in Fort Myers my whole life, we took Hannah when she visited back in July. It was so fun, we had cheeseburgers, margaritas, key lime pie and saw the wildlife.

Join a group after I graduated - Completed

I joined a couple! Rocky Mountain Texas Exes was my first {very thankful for that one!} and I joined my local chapter of the American Associaton of University Women, which is something I'm pretty involved with. I'm excited to join more stuff and I love the people I've already met.

Participate in a donation drive, at least, once a year - Working

I need to find my 2019 donation spot but I've been doing it every year!

Treat myself to a spa day - Completed

While I didn't do an all out spa day I did treat myself to an hour long massage as well as some relaxation in a comfy robe. It was so nice to head to the spa after work and just take my mind off everything. And surprisingly the masseuse said I didn't have that much stress, so hey! Look at that! Exciting times!

Watch three foreign films - Completed

Earlier this year I got really into Turkish rom-coms and I don't regret it. They were amazing. Would highly recommend to just let your brain rest and watch 'em.

Try five new foods - Working

It's hard to try new foods because I feel like I've tried so many. But I'm working on it. If y'all have any suggestions for some off-the-beaten-path foods, let me know.

Read five non-fiction books - Working

I bought four more and I plan on finishing them as part of my #52 challenge!

Starting Soon:

Take a cooking class

I kind of forgot about this goal? But I found some options in the Denver-area that I'm really intrigued by. I also want to throw some dinner parties with my friends so I think taking a cooking class and learning a new recipe could be fun! So look forward to those photos.

Try five classic candies

I just need to go to a place that has old-school treats and pick some up. Maybe I'll do a taste test video or write a post about 'em, haven't quite decided.

Send more postcards when I travel

I haven't been doing this but I want to! My parents are so good at it, so now I want to take this initiative when I travel. I'm off to Florida, Croatia and of course Texas in 2019 so I have the chance!

Bake a new cupcake flavor

I just need to open my cupcake cookbook, pick one and just do it! I'm thinking one weekend this month I'll go ahead and make some.

Get more political

This is an ongoing goal, I'm not checking it off until I vote in November {that way I'll have voted each year of the 101}. I've gotten involved with AAUW and I plan to join the League of Women Voters soon. Basically, I'm all about getting women those equal fundamental rights!!

Attend a symphony

I'm looking for the perfect night at the symphony to attend here in Denver, so if y'all know of any, lemme know.

Go to a trivia night

Trying to convince a few of my girl friends to go with me! But this should be easy because there are like 1,000 breweries in Denver and they all do trivia nights.

Try a new cuisine

I'm leaning Ethiopian...
