Let's Talk: Sarah Childress Polk

When Sarah was growing up, Andrew Jackson called her "wealthy, pretty, ambitious, and intelligent." She assisted her husband with his speeches, gave him advice on policy and was active in his campaigns. Sarah hosted the first Thanksgiving dinner at the White House. I personally love her curly hair:

I have my life back!!!

Hello all! I hope you have liked the past few posts, today I finished my extended essay and I feel like I can finally get back to my life now! The past week has been late night computer sittings, chocolate milk, and a playlist of two songs. I thought I would share them with you! I'll be in Pittsburg this weekend-xoxo HP.

Looking Forward to Pittsburg

So this weekend I am off to Pennsylvania for many reasons. Some of which include that it's the anniversary of Gettysburg this year,  I need to visit the capitol, and of course, FSU is playing Pitt on labor day. It will be a lovely long weekend and I am sure the weather will be fantastic! The photos will be up next week, as well as a guide-xoxo HP.

Labor Day

Everyone knows the rule "no white after labor day," so here is how to make that last weekend worth it all. This dress (it's Calvin Klein) is way too nice to be dressed down with Target espadrilles and a jean jacket, but it is, because why? Because you can. Go out there and wear your amazingly white outfit because in a few short days, such an outfit will be a fashion faux pas.

Chocolate High Cupcakes

For my first batch of cupcakes, I went with a classic, chocolate. But these are not your ordinary chocolate cupcakes, they are CHOCOLATE!!! You can find my recipe for chocolate cake here, or use boxed cake mix.

Icing:
-2 sticks butter
-16 oz powder sugar
-1/8 teaspoon salt
-1/3 cup cream
-1/2 cup cocoa powder

One Pair, Three Ways

Do you know anyone that owns poison green Doc Martins? Because I am the only crazy person on the planet to purchase such a pair. I was in Ireland and everyone was wearing them so I thought "what the heck, let's do it!" Probably a bad idea...oh well, I can still wear them for spirit days. Here are three ways to wear them:

{Zara top, UO jeans}

{Tulane top, AE jean shorts}

Quotes of the Week

Let's Talk: Helen Herron Taft

Helen was the first, first lady, to ride along with her husband down Pennsylvania Avenue. She suffered a stroke, but powered through it to entertain people three times a week in the White House. Her greatest party was the Silver Wedding Anniversary Gala. She also had no track for prohibition, she hosted wet parties. Below are some of her fabulous dresses, and look at that hair!

5 Rain Jackets?!

So how many rain jackets do you guys have? Because I have five, yes five. I think it has something to do with the fact that I live in Florida (and at the moment it is raining). But who knows. I thought it would be fun to create a post featuring all of my lovely outerwear, enjoy-xoxo HP.

One Year

I was looking through my calendar the other week when I realized the blog's anniversary was comping up. I had been meaning to update the site (like the new look?) so I decided to launch it on the blog's one year birthday. It has been a crazy, amazing, phenomenal year. Here are some of my favorite moments:

One Dress, Three Ways

I love the versatility of a black t-shirt dress, so I buy one whenever there is a sale at H&M. You can wear it plain, you can throw jackets over it, you can put on tights, you can pair it with heels, flats, sneakers, EVERYTHING! So here are three ways to pair it:

{GAP jacket, scarf (gifted), Spectators (UO)}

{Cole Haan shoes, necklace (DIY)}

{Eddie Bauer jacket,

Master French Chocolatier Jacques Torres' Famous Chocolate Chip Cookies

By now you know I mainly bake cupcakes, but sometimes there is a recipe that just attracts my attention. This is one of them. I'm also a total francophile so this being a famous French chocolatier's recipe is kind of amazing.

One Jacket, Three Ways

With summer starting to come to a close, it means we put away our summer items (that is if you live anywhere other than Florida). So that means we say goodbye to seersucker...which might be the hardest thing for me because I love it so much. Here are three ways to wear that jacket one more time:
{Eddie Bauer Jacket (Goodwill)}

{Bucks (gifted), AE jean shorts,
Menora top (Target), pearls (gifted)}

{Just Ginger dress (Marshals), Calvin Klein sling backs}

Five Things That Inspire Me

For a yearbook project the class was given an assignment to put five things that inspire us on a piece of paper. Being the EIC, I thought I should do something a little more creative, so I choose to use quotes that represent things that inspire me, here they are:

When you just can't make it to The Camberley Brown...

Some foods scream "SOUTH" one is the infamous Hot Brown from The Camberley Brown hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. Something about the simple sandwich is delicious. It was my first time making it (p.s., I didn't know what a broiler was!), so it was an experience. Enjoy!

{Hot Brown Recipe}

Ingredients:
4oz. Butter
6 tbs. Flour
3 cups Milk
1 Beaten Egg
6 tbs. Grated Parmesan Cheese
1 oz. Whipped Cream
Salt & Pepper
Slices of Roast Turkey
Bacon Strips

Instructions:
Melt butter and add enough flour to make a reasonably thick roux. Add milk and Parmesan cheese. Add egg to thicken sauce, but do not allow to boil. Remove from heat. Fold in whipped cream. Add salt and pepper to taste. For each Ot Brown, place two slices of toast on a melt dish. Cover the toast with a  liberal amount of turkey. Pour a generous amount of sauce over the turkey and toast. Sprinkle with additional Parmesan cheese. Place entire dish under a broiler until the sauce is speckled brown and bubbly. Remove from broiler, cross two pieces of bacon on top, and serve immediately.

Throwback Thursday

In case you don't follow me on Instagram, here is my #tbt. 13 years ago today (give or take a week or two) I started kingergarten. I was extremely excited to be starting school, where I would make friendships that have lasted my entire life (so far). Today a new and improved version of that little girl departed from her house. She is still excited about school, but for a different reason, and she is wearing a prank night t-shirt not an adorable little red dress. I mean look at how stylish I was! So here's to senior year, it'll be a great one.

First Day Inspiration

Today is my first day back at school, I will probably be exhausted by 11am, but I am so happy to start back! Here are some items that are making me happy.

Heavenly Biscuit

Things that make a Pigott family happy...cinnamon rolls. Heavenly Biscuit on Fort Myers Beach provides this with their phenomenal, delicious, gooey, fat inducing rolls. It makes you want to cry with joy at the most amazing cinnamon roll in town.

Quotes of the Week

So this Thursday begins my last year of high school. I am thrilled yet sad, worked up yet calm, worrying yet at ease. I'm not really sure what this school year will bring (obviously stress!), but I am excited to see what comes. This blog has become something I truly enjoy and love doing, and I cannot imagine life without it. I have so many amazing posts coming up (I want to post them all right now!), so stayed tuned!

Fashion + The Packers

While in Green Bay, I discovered that even football coaches understand the meaning of fashion. The coaches would buy mink stole's for the wives of the players, because a "happy wife is a happy life." They believed that the wives of the players were the key to the team, so they supplied them with the latest of fashions. Come on people who mix stripes and plaid, even football coaches know fashion, come on.

Lambeau Field

My family is absolutely obsessed with football, which you all probably know. So when we saw that Green Bay was so close to the American Club we decided it was a. Here are some photos from the adventure: must

One of the most entertaining things about my trip to Kohler was the design center. This state of the art, three story show room shows the best of Kohler's products. From the newest toilet to the bathtub seating, you can find everything involving a kitchen or bathroom here.

Martha Graham Room

I have no idea how much I can say about the American Club, aside from the fact that it was phenomenal. You saw my post yesterday on the public areas, well here are shots of my room. It was a tad small, but the bathroom made up for everything. Check it out:

Mama's Banana Pudding

During the summer, at least in Florida, we practically stay indoors all day. But one thing that makes those long nights bearable is banana pudding. My mom is an absolute expert and every time I cannot have one piece (slice? scoop?). It is also perfect for all holidays including Independence Day and Memorial/Labor Day. ENJOY!
Personally I like Maya Angelou's recipe which is here (but we use one from memory).

Literary Journey Through Louisiana

My dad is absolutely obsessed with James Lee Burke books, especially those involving Dave Robicheaux. So when we drove back through Louisiana, we decided to go on a literary journey through the small town of New Iberia (where the books are set). These gritty pieces have a lot in common with the actual town, and below is the evidence. I would highly suggest you go if you have enjoyed his books and take the historic walking tour
